Antepartum care involves teaching and educating the pregnant woman on many things. When a pregnant client attends her prenatal visits there are some situation where she may need to be referred to a social worker. These situations include when a young pregnant adolescent does not have support systems or is having other problems, when a client is suspected of receiving abuse or does not feel safe where they stay, or if she is in need of public assistance. Pregnant women are often advised to take prenatal vitamins. Vitamins can usually be obtained from a healthy diet, but in order to adhere to maternal and fetal increasing demands and to prevent vitamin deficiencies, vitamin supplements are recommended. The increase in maternal blood volume and the continual growth of the fetus and placenta is one of the causes of the increased need for iron. Iron supplements help prevent anemia. Folic acid helps to prevent neural tube defects (Olds, London, Ladewig, Davidson, 2004).
