Neal Salisbury, “The Indians’ Old World: Native Americans and the Coming of Europeans,” William and Mary Quarterly 53 (July 1996), 435-458. Many people involved in the studies of history, anthropology, archaeology, and other subjects have recently turned toward the study of the Native American people during colonial times. These studied have changed the way we think about the start of America and the European settlers. We now realize that when Europeans arrived here it was not a vast land of emptiness but yet flourishing with several million people. When we look back we realize that the American Indians are an integral part of colonial North America. Most historians continue to represent the American history as having been sprung forward by the settlement of European explorers and colonizers.
