AMERICA: ARE WE READY
In the 21st century we face enemies with the same capabilities as we have for waging Biological and Chemical war. The terrorist threat to America is changing. During the 1970s and 80s, United States policymakers prepared for bombings and hijackings overseas. Today, policymakers are preparing to defend against attacks against population and critical infrastructure targets in the United States homeland. The worst of these threats confronting policymakers is the terrorist use of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), especially chemical or biological weapons. The actual probability of chemical or biological attacks remains low compared to other less risky terrorist tactics such as car bombings. However, the consequences of a chemical or biological terrorist attack would be so dire that policymakers have been compelled to enact a number of recent initiatives for domestic preparedness against weapons of mass destruction terrorism in the United States. It has been said that America is invincible. We have only been attacked once on our own soil (Peal Harbor). Now after the events of September Eleventh we see we are not that secure. I will bring to light my thoughts with supporting evidence on how unsafe America is from a Chemical or Biological attack. For many years other countries have been stockpiling Biological and Chemical weapons. The specter of the use of chemical or biological weapons in warfare has recently gained a significant amount of attention, primarily because of the looming threat of a United States war on Iraq. The general public knows little of their destructive capabilities due to the fact that these weapons of mass destruction have hardly been used in modern day warfare. When the first atom bomb was dropped by the United States in August 1949 on Hiroshima, Japan, the world braced itself for the new face of nuclear warfare. The ability to kill thousands of people in less than 10 minutes was mind boggling and the introduction of weapons of mass destruction suggested the complete obliteration of antagonistic sides in an ensuing world conflict. Biological and chemical weapons are classified under weapons of mass destruction. Please allow me to provide you some brief history of these weapons. These types of weapons have surprisingly been used since the early 1300s, the first case being recorded in 1346 in Feodossia, Ukraine. The Genoese army used rats and their disease-carrying fleas to attack the Tatar soldiers.
