MOVIE REVIEW : AMERICAN HISTORY X Yr 11 Essay David Ellaby American History X is a brutally compelling and socially poignant movie which embraces the age-old issues of racism, bigotry and ethnic hatred. Set in contemporary middle-class America, the director Tony Kaye dramatically and graphically deals with the complex psychological and social dynamics of mixed-race interaction. The opening scenes frighteningly and quickly establish the direction of the story, a Neo-Nazi skinhead intent on punishing every non-white, non-protestant person who dares to impinge on the rights of white Americans. The focal character is Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), a leading member of a white supremist group, incarcerated for three years for the violent murder of two Negroes. The story is narrated through the eyes of danny (Edward Furlong), initially an impressionable teenager who idolises his brother Derek.
