Jung writes about the appearance of symbols in our dreams and how we are to use those symbols to bring to consciousness and awareness all of our parts. ... When we’re awake, we tend to be rational and look at the symbols in our lives only for their direct and apparent meaning. However, it is important to remember that symbols have hidden meanings and values and that they appear to us in our dreams in order to help up become whole.
Symbols appear to us in order to give our lives meaning. Sometimes they appear as archetypes, which are patterns of symbols. In order to interpret the symbols in our dreams, it’s important to look at them with an intelligent mind. Symbols are the way in which our unconscious speaks to us; it’s necessary that we “listen” carefully and interpret them thoughtfully in order to find the path down which they are trying to lead us.
Most importantly, symbols appear to us, so that we can integrate all of the conflicting aspects in our psyche. ...
Our unconscious and the symbols that appear to us in our dreams can heal the split between nature and spirit that is so common in the modern-day man. If we look to the symbols in our dreams, we can discover our dreams and maybe, eventually, become our true and whole Self. ... This is, of course, much like what happens to humans and the role of symbols as discussed in the previous section. ... In order to give his daughter what she has asked for, her father, an old man, picks the rose from the garden of the Beast, who in turn takes him as a prisoner. The Beast, showing unusual compassion for the old man, allows him to return home to his daughter, as long as he promises to return. ... We should look to them as guides and bridges, just as we do other symbols.
The Self is formed by the personal unconscious, which is unique to each individual, and the collection unconscious, which is full of symbols that run throughout the world and that all men have in common. ... It is important to investigate our dreams and look for the symbols in order to find these guiding lights.
