Comparing and Contrasting Calvin Trillin and Joan Didion

In comparing Calvin’s Trillin narration of “Jim, Tex, and the one armed Man”, Joan Didion, in her narration of “Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream” uses a writing technique I found most compelling. While gathering material Joan Didion became interested in the murder case, however, more importantly she was intrigued by the environment of the city of San Bernardino, where a murder took place. ... The importance of Banyan Street to Didion’s narration primarily because it is the scene and point where a crime had been allegedly committed. In doing so, Didion immediately engages her reader into the setting. Calvin Trillin, who’s narration is more like a story, recounting step by step the events leading to the crime, dives straight into the main character. Joan Didion focuses her attention to certain aspects and details that are relevant to the characters and the murder scene. Therefore the reader is confronted with two contrasting writings styles, one which reveals importance to setting, and the other revealing importance to character, both important in discerning how and why the murders in each case, took place.
It is hard not to be compelled by Didion’s writings style, starting with the first paragraph which radiates a creepy and weird tone describing the San Bernardino Valley to be hot and dry, making it difficult for the people to breath. There is definitely an aura of death to the San Bernardino Valley which Didion reassures by the first line of the paragraph “This is a story about love and death in the golden land. ... Trillin on the other hand begins his narration with the character’s name, “Jim Berry”, and dives into a character synopsis focusing the reader’s attention to this character’s peculiar personality which later proves to be critically important to understand.
