I woke up on the morning of March 26th as if it were any other day. I got dressed, jumped in my car, and headed for school. My morning classes progressed normally as they usually do. Not one thing about my day seemed abnormal. But just as I walked into my second period class, the school’s administrator came into the classroom and requested to see me in his office. “Miss Zimmerman,” he said in a concerned voice, “Your mother is on the phone wishing to speak with you immediately.” My mother’s voice was faint and quivering, as if she had been crying. “What’s wrong mom?” I asked. “Your grandfather,” she paused and then slightly inhaled before mentioning the words I will never forget, “he is very sick.” My expression became blank. “Your father just took him to the hospital. You need to come home right now.” Before I had the chance to ask any questions she said, “I don’t want to talk on the phone about it sweetheart, just please come home.” Not sure what to think, I checked out of school and headed straight home. As I was driving home, a million thoughts raced through my head. It had just started to rain and the roads were drizzled with rainwater. I felt confused, scared, and anxious all at once.
