Impact of Society and Culture on Family Life

... In our society today, every family varies in identity as a result of how the surrounding environment and culture changes as time goes on. Because each family is comprised of individuals whom are different from those who make up any other family, it is obvious that each family would be affected by different dynamics in society depending upon their identity. ... In the following essay I will look at my childhood and family life and how it has been affected by society and culture, and compare it to children with a different background and adolescent upbringing.
Opening up an in-depth conversation about one’s family and childhood raises many views and opinions that are often somewhat subjective. One person’s thoughts and definitions of family life may be very different from that of someone else’s, however this does not make one answer more correct than another. ...
To many a family is simply a family, no one really analyzes this definition in everyday life until one is asked to do so. I feel as though the word family can be used in different contexts and mean to completely different things. My two definitions are broken down into two different terms, a household family and an acquainted family. In my definition, a household family would be comprised of at least one guardian, whether it be a parent, grandparent or legal guardian, and their child. This being the most essential existence of a family, the structure can grow from this and still be considered a household family in my view. In our society today the most basic family is comprised of a mother and father with their children, however in our changing culture this basic structure is often thrown off balance. With my other definition, the acquainted family, I see this family being brought together by similarities that acquaint them to be a part each other’s everyday life. This could be a baseball team with a close bond in life where each person is dependent upon the other for support in this sport that they play with one another. ...
When comparing my definitions of what a family is to that of the author’s it is obvious that we both come to the consensus that there is no typical family. However they make clear their definition among others, “A family is any sexually expressive or parent-child or other kin relationship in which people-usually related by ancestry, marriage, or adoption-(1) form an economic unit and care for any young, (2) consider their identity to be significantly attached to the group, and (3) commit to maintaining that group over time.
