“A transformation is indeed much more than a simple change in presentation.” To transform is to dramatically alter the form, appearance, character structure or context of a text. A transformation can take place when exploring the contrasting contexts, values and mediums of the particular texts. A transformation occurs from a novel to a movie, slightly converting the text to be better suited to a contemporary audience and therefor allowing the responders to gain new insights and greater meaning. The film “Bridget Jones’s Diary” is a modern appropriation of Pride and Prejudice, an 18th Century novel written by Jane Austen. Due to the historical context of these texts alterations to the novel must be made to adapt to society’s changing values, ideas, experiences and assumed knowledge. The connection between text and context is significant in any transformation. Society’s values and social attitudes towards particular issues influence the form in which the text is conveyed. In order for today’s society to perceive the text, they must first be able to understand or relate to the time period in which the text was composed.
