Importance of Sleep and the Effects of Not Getting Enough

No one can go without sleep for long. ... Recent research shows that the loss of even a single night’s sleep is enough to cramp a person’s decision-making, particularly when creativity is needed. Sleep is very essential to a person’s life so he should not believe the myth that mature people need less of it.
Sleep can basically be defined as period of deep rest in which someone typically reduces his movement. ... Sleep can also be easily ended, unlike a coma, by a loud noise or a bright flash of light.
There are two main types of sleep that alternate: nonrapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). In man, this alteration takes place about every ninety minutes, first passing through drowsiness into NREM sleep and then into REM sleep. The two types of sleep do not represent light and deep sleep, but rather are totally different phases, distinguished by different patterns. Both kinds of sleep are necessary. If the sleeper is deliberately disturbed whenever he starts REM sleep, he can be selectively deprived of it. If allowed to sleep undisturbed, he does so excessively as if in comparison. Similarly, if the sleeper is disturbed whenever a predominance of very large, slow EEG waves develops during NREM sleep, he can be deprived of NREM stages 3 and 4, and when later allowed to sleep undisturbed, he spends excess time in these stages (Laird, 393).

Sleep appears necessary for a person’s nervous system to work properly. Too little sleep leaves a person drowsy and unable to concentrate the next day. ... Sleep restores energy to the body, particularly to the nervous system and the brain, which is very active during sleep, re-energizing itself while the body rests. ... Sleep also coincides with the release of growth hormone in children and young adults. Many of the body’s cells also show increase pollution and reduced breakdown of proteins during deep sleep (Caldwell, 51).
