No More Pompoms For so many years men and women have argued amongst or with each other about what makes an activity a sport and what the “real” sports truly are. Many people don’t categorize activities such as synchronize swimming, figure skating, gymnastics, or cheerleading with sports such as football or hockey. The most controversial activity now a days is cheerleading. It can be argued that cheerleading is a sport: injuries result from the athletic activity; it is a competitive event; and it requires a high degree of physical fitness. Every sport has an injury risk and cheerleaders like athletes suffer from sport injuries. “The most recent estimate showed 21,096 injuries were associated with cheerleading last year.” a journalist from the New York Times stated in an October 3rd 2000 edition. This quote proves that cheerleading has as high an injury rate as football. Just like in any other sport, the athletes who participate in this activity are at a constant danger of pulling a hamstring, breaking bones, spraining or twisting joints, getting black eyes, concusions, shin splints, dislocations, muscle cramps, and total fatigue. Cheerleading is a constant and repetitive physical demand just like football and puts just as much pressure on your body as any other sport, if not more.
