Jealousy and Women in Two Similar Films

In Parker’s “Othello” and Nelson’s “O,” the women are portrayed in a way that reflects how women actually were or are in their respective time periods. Women are not the most important characters in these two films of Shakespeare’s “Othello”. However, the women characters do play some important roles in developing the central themes of the films. One of the major themes that the women help to develop is the theme of jealousy. This is probably the most important theme of the two films since it is the one that causes the deaths of the all the main characters except for Cassio.
Women in the 1600’s were usually very subservient and restrained. In Parker’s “Othello,” which is set in the 1600’s, the women are generally obedient to the men in their lives, however, they are probably stronger women than were typical of that time period. ...
All three of these women help to develop the jealousy theme in “Othello” even if they do not know that they are doing so. Emilia, being the typical, submissive lady, does much to push the jealousy theme. ... By stealing the scarf, Emilia helps to inadvertently advance Iago’s jealousy plot of revenge. ... ” Desdemona’s strong personality helps to progress the jealousy theme. ... It is also the strong part of her personality that advances the jealousy theme. ... In Nelson’s O, these three girls help develop the theme of jealousy in “O” and inadvertently help contribute to Hugo’s plot.
