The nature of the relationship between language and thought remains one of the unresolved questions of modern linguistics. Although the claim that language and thought interact in many ways is undisputed, there existed, and perhaps still exists, a controversy over the issue of exactly how they interact. ... , thought influences language and vice versa. ... In its modern formulation, this hypothesis comprises the twin principles of linguistic determinism and linguistic relativity, both of which seek to explain the influence of language on perception. The chief difference between these principles is that the latter attempts to correlate differences in language with categories of thought, whereas the former states that language determines thought, to a greater or lesser extent.
