Love of Mother
Mother to Mother, a novel by Sindiwe Magona, demonstrates that apartheid is to blame for many of South Africa’s current societal problems. ... Magona uses her writing abilities to express what she believed the mother of the murderer would feel. This was appropriate for her to do because the mother of one of the four convicted killers was a childhood friend. While being classified as “fiction,” Mother to Mother is drawn from actual and realistic conditions in South Africa. ...
Throughout the novel, Magona traces the mother’s life from childhood to the present. And with this information, I gained a respect and sympathy for the mother of the murderer and the black citizens of South Africa. The book begins with a letter to Amy Biehl’s mother followed by the “guts” of the story, in which we learn about the time surrounding and leading up to the murder. ... Her style uses the pathos appeal by pulling on emotions and allowing the reader, who could probably better identify with the Biehl’s, to develop a personal connection with the mother of the murderer. ... She demonstrated a great understanding of Mandisa’s society as well as the maternal love all mother have for their children.
