Mercantilism
Mercantilism Every European government, during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, followed an economic policy that has been known since 1776, Mercantilism. Mercantilism means, that the state would direct economic activities inside its borders, subordinating private profit to public good. To be specific, the European government wanted to increase national wealth by discouraging imports and encouraging exports. America wanted to have a market for its manufactures and woolen cloth, and a source of supply for raw materials that it had to import from other countries. But what England wanted was not incompatible with what the colonists wanted: a cheap source for the manufactures they had to buy, and a ready market for the raw materials they had to sell.
