Mesoamerica Language

Mesoamerica was composed of great linguistic diversity. Even though Spanish is the dominant language of that region, there are eighty Native American languages within its borders and Belize even has English as its official language.
Many languages were classified into groups called language families. A language family is a historically based grouping of languages according to their degree of mutual relationship. ... In time, a language changes so much that speakers of different dialects can no longer understand one another. Every Mesoamerican language is a member of one of eleven genetic units: some are families of languages, while others consist of a single language. ... Mesoamerican language was not only in word, but also pictures. ... In most Mesoamerican language families, transitive sentences are constructed with their words in a different order that in English or Spanish. ... In some areas, linguistic diversity is so great that every town has its own dialect or even its own language. ... A lot of changes in language can have the effect of increasing or decreasing social and linguistic distance. ... Ever since the Europeans arrived in Mesoamerica, native languages have suffered greatly in terms of numbers of speakers and social status. Many of the languages have become extinct, and very few of the millions of speakers of indigenous languages in Mesoamerica have been literate in native languages. ...
The main direct cause of language loss is a process called language shift: the speakers of one language begin using another language in place of it.
