Matthews Story

If I were the teacher addressing the following questions for Matthew’s parents I would have to approach the subject in a caring and compassionate way. I can imagine what a difficult time it must be for them trying to understand all of the new information that is coming to them, and dispelling the rumors and negative things they have and will hear in the months and years to come. The first question I would address would be what mental retardation is. Mental retardation can be defined as condition in which there are certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child. Children with mental retardation may take longer to learn to speak, walk, and take care of their personal needs such as dressing or eating. They are likely to have trouble learning in school. They can and will learn, but it will take them longer and there may be some things they cannot learn. The second question I would address for Matthews parents is what are the causes of mental retardation? The most common cause’s doctors have found for mental retardation are genetic which can be abnormal genes inherited from parents, errors when the genes combine. Problems during pregnancy can also be a cause of mental retardation.
