Global business is an established fact of life for many companies, but most find themselves
struggling nonetheless to manage people effectively on a global scale. ... At the other extreme, companies may
give up all central control in the interest of local autonomy, thereby sacrificing the added
value that a global organization can bring.
A diverse global workforce requires managers to embrace the tension created by striving
for both commonality and difference and to extract the full business advantage from the
energy that tension can generate. Doing this enables a company to:
Realize the synergies and economies possible in a global organization
Effectively reach local markets and manage local workforces
Release the creative potential inherent in heterogeneous teams made up of
individuals with different outlooks, thought processes, experiences, etc.
Defining Global Diversity
Differences in the workforce can be a powerful agent for international business success,
allowing the organization to better understand and meet the needs of diverse customers. ... Because people
brought up in different cultures often relate in very different ways to other people and to
the environment around them, managing and collaborating across cultures are sometimes
daunting challenges, susceptible to misunderstandings and missteps. ... However your
company communicates the concept, the term “global diversity” generally refers to
differences in culture; language; business structure, systems, and customs; management
style; workers’ expectations; and any other organizational variable that might be affected
by where and with whom the company does business.

the North American approach to gender, ethnic, and other differences does not
resonate and/or where there is a different legislative framework
