When reading a novel, there are certain criteria that determines whether or not its worth my time to read. My main focus at first is character substance, Is the character in the first or third dimension? In the first chapter, you immediately get a taste of Shigamatsu’s stubborn and arrogant ways. (page 16 paragraph 2) Shigamatsu is not the most modest of men, and his wife Shigeko isn’t a shy push over either. (Chapter 4 p.59 Para. 2) Shigamatsu’s arrogance can appear to seem a little immature.
