In this section we retrace the analysis presented in the previous section, and apply it, step by step, to the global political arena. ... Having observed this point we can see now how Meyrowitz・s insights concerning the nature of social situations carry over to the way we should think of the intra-national/international domains of political action. The corollary to Meyrowitz・s point in this context is this: what is essential to the nature of a political situation, like its social counterpart, are the flows of information, communication and influence among its participants, not its physical whereabouts. ... The rapidly growing global interconnectivity lowers the barriers between the intra- and the inter-national, bringing hitherto unaccessible (or partly accessible) backstage, internal processes within reach (of both knowledge and influence) of the global front. ... With the rapid flow of information among communication media (enabled, among other factors, by the existence of global mass-media networks) this ability is gradually eroded: the politician will be confronted on the international scene with his backstage, so called (but not any 10 more) internal statements. ... ___________ In sum, I claim to have shown (albeit in outline) that Meyrowitz・s analysis in No Sense of Place can serve us in our coming to grips with contemporary processes in global politics. |
