There have been many debates over time, in regards to the question: Is Man a Machine? ... He conveyed his opinions through a very controversial dissertation, Man a Machine , questioning many aspects of humans and animals. ... ” (Mettrie, 13) That our learning is like a machine’s; programmatic, repetitive and given to us by a “creator” or trainer of some form when he states: “Man was trained like an animal”(Mettrie, 13). ... I do not agree with any of these statements; perhaps because I myself am disturbed by these extreme concepts, but also because I truly believe in free will, and feeling and sensation, and it is simply beyond me to believe that our learning process is mechanic like a machine’s. ... Then he would no longer be a wild man, nor an imperfect man, but a perfect man…” (Mettrie 12) are, in my opinion, the most controversial parts of his piece. ... He bluntly states that there is not much of a difference between humans and animals: “From animals to man there is no abrupt transition, and true philosophers will agree. ... As discussed earlier, Mettrie also felt there was a strong relationship between humans and animals and our education progress, where we need to be taught something or “programmed” like a machine, where as in reality, humans do have the instinct and desire to learn and evolve.
