The Tourism NSW Masterplan (1995) identified special events as an important part of the tourism industry because they generate a high level of urgency and trigger the conversion of intention to an actual visit. Shaping a tourist destination through tourism events Event tourism is defined by Getz (1991) as the systematic planning, development and marketing of events as tourist attractions, catalysts for other developments, image builders, and animators of attractions and destination areas. Events can play a number of roles to assist in shaping a tourist destination. As a tourist attraction, events can contribute to the destination’s attractiveness, pull visitors to the destination by motivating and serving as triggers for tourist visits, and also change the type of visitor the destination attracts. ...
