Paleolithic (old stone age):

Lower Paleolithic
• About 6 million years ago, earliest known form of man
• “Lucy” and “Toumai” are the names of the only skeletons found from this period, although “Toumai” is supposedly twice as old as “Lucy”

Middle Paleolithic
• Time period of the Neanderthal
• Neanderthal skeleton discovered in Germany in 1853
• No evidence that art was created in this time
• Neanderthals are the first to bury their dead, evidence found of ceremonies/traditions

Upper Paleolithic
• 40,000 B. ...
• Cro-Magnon time period
• Cro-Magnon skeleton first found in France
• Very end of the ice age
• Art develops in this era

Forms of art from this pre-historic time period:

Mobilary Art
• “art that can go with people”
• usually small carvings
• animal carvings very popular
 animal carvings are very small
 usually part of a weapon
 found all over the world
• “Venus” carvings also extremely popular
 almost all made out of non-perishable materials
 range in size from 6” to 2”
 almost all have same body shape: small head, little/no facial detail, large breasts/abdominal area, tiny legs and feet, usually no arms or very small arms
 all have similar focus on the child-bearing parts of the body
 usually not designed to stand up
 head usually bowed down
 “Venus of Villandorf” is the most famous venus figure
 Very few figures had slimmer bodies or had arms up in the air or sticking out, and very, very few had defined faces
• Human/animal forms also found
 Always man and animal combinations, never women


Cave Art
• Always found deep in caves
• Only found in the very restricted region of Franco-Cantabrian (North Spain and South France)
