Nazism: Racism or Economics? After World War I, many political parties tried to seize power from weaker government and German Workers’ party was one of them. Its program combined socialist economic ideas with rabid nationalism and opposition to democracy. (www.historychannel.com) In 1920 an Austrian-born Adolf Hitler took control of the party and changed its name, reorganized them, and reoriented them in his own personality. Hitler appealed to many followers by using anti-Semitism, anti-Communist rhetoric, and attacked the Treaty of Versailles. Under heavy criticism from party members the socialist views of the programmed were minimized and their main focus turned to racism.(www.historychannel.com) William Brustein, a professor at the University of Minnesota, believed that the Nazi party was based on economics more then racism. (www.english.upenn.edu) Brustein believed that the Nazi party played the racism angle to produce stronger organization. Nazi Ideology The Nazi ideology was made up of several ideas of famous thinkers. Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf, was used as the basis for the Nazi party. According to the Nazi ideology, races could be scientifically classified as superior and inferior.
