Juliet Schor defines this as a “new consumerism. ... ” Schor defines new consumerism as “an up- scaling of lifestyle norms; the pervasiveness of conspicuous status goods and of competition for acquiring them; and the growing discernment between consumer desires and incomes,” (7). ... In this book, Schor along with other authors further explore the concept of a “new consumerism.” While its cause is controversial, we have indeed entered a new consumerism, which has raised public concern and needs a solution.
While all authors agree that we are engaged in a new consumerism, they all attribute it to different reasons. ... “ Holt challenges Scholes’ view and attributes the new consumerism to a pleasure seeking activity, condoning it. ... All people especially children are suffering the consequences of the irresponsibility, ignorance or greed of consumers that feel the need to keep up with consumerism (to feel a sense of self –worth or equality). ... While this information may seem appalling, or if the environment isn’t someone’s main concern, a solution to over consumption (or irresponsible consumerism) needs a solution not only to protect the place we live but the people we live with.
The first and most obvious solution proposed would be to increase income in order to keep up with the new consumerism.
