In a neural impulse transmission, the axon terminals – extensions of the neurons – are separated from each other by a gap less than a millionth of an inch, called the synaptic gap. The nerve impulse, or action potential, crosses this junction, the synapse, and when the action potential reaches the axon terminals, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are the “chemical messenger” that cross the synaptic gap in order to send the nerve impulse.
