Normalisation of Cannabis
In recent months the drug marijuana, also commonly known as cannabis, was reclassified as a class ‘c’ drug. ... This reclassification supports what is labelled as the ‘normalisation thesis.’ The normalisation thesis generally means behaviours and characteristics which are as culturally normative as possible, (Brown et. ... The reclassification of cannabis to a class ‘c’ drug strengthens the normalisation thesis where by the prediction that recreational drugs such as cannabis will become a very ‘normal’ leisure activity participated in by a large majority of young people in society. ... But others disagree with this view, Shiner and Newburn (1997:511-529) claim that the normalisation of drug use has some distance to travel before it assumes the status of a ‘normalised’ activity. ... Now that cannabis is a class ‘c’ drug, society will become more and more accepting of this recreational drug and the normalisation it carries socially. ... It has been said that this process of normalisation reflects the development or emergence of a new, post modern, social order (South 1999:139). ... These figures support the normalisation of recreational drugs, especially cannabis, in society today. ... As suggested earlier, figures such as 42% of fifteen to sixteen year olds show that the normalisation of cannabis is becoming increasingly apparent and it is almost unusual for an adolescent to have never experimented in any way with cannabis than to have used it socially with friends. ... People are informed of changes on the drugs front and young people are informed enough to know the risks they have taken, and these must not be off putting enough to change the increasing normalisation of using cannabis as a recreational drug.
Although a lot of evidence shows that the reclassification of drugs to a class ‘c’ drug supports the normalisation thesis there are many arguments against this. As suggested before it is believed that the normalisation of using cannabis has a long way to come before it is completely accepted. ... Using recreational drugs, according to Shiner and Newburn, is not taken as lightly as the normalisation thesis suggests. ... The other argument against the normalisation thesis is that even though those in clear evidence of increasing levels of drugs use among young people, both the extent and frequency are easily exaggerated through over reliance on life time measures (Shiner and Newburn 1997:511-529).
