Prohibition Doesn't Work

The question of whether marijuana should be legalized is a controversial issue that has been hotly debated for the past thirty years. There is overwhelming evidence to support legalization of marijuana for medicinal and environmental purposes, but should is also be legalized for personal use? I believe that marijuana prohibition is immoral, clearly causing more harm than good. Does it make sense that the average time served in prison for selling marijuana is four years, compared with just one year for rape or manslaughter? Whether or not an individual uses marijuana should be a personal choice that is not subject to criminal penalties. The position I will take is that marijuana should be legalized for all purposes, but I will focus on recreational use. Marijuana laws are creating criminals. More and more people are being thrown into the court system everyday simply because they smoke pot. Otherwise law-abiding citizens are being put in jail with people who have committed serious crimes. Not to mention the fines and counseling one is forced to deal with. Legalization would unclog the court system considerably. Since fewer people would need trials, justice would flow much faster and more important cases would receive proper attention. This would allow the juries to make more considered opinions.
