Towards the end of the book, when Petey was hospitalized due to being sick, they did not want to take the proper steps to treat him, rather wanted to leave him to die. Trevor, his grandson (not biological), tried to convince the doctors that Petey was not ready to die and that there were medical procedures that could be done in order to prolong his life. The doctors believed that there decision was based on the quality of life Petey could expect with no family, and the state he was in, they wanted him to die with dignity. Petey communicated to Trevor that he was not ready and therefore what the doctors thought about Petey’s quality of life and what Petey thought were two different stories. ... When Petey was a child there was nothing that they could do to help him with his disability and his muscle control. ... I was appalled by the way that Petey was treated.
