Peter Singer is putting an argument forth in relation to charity becoming a moral obligation. ... His argument is based, as I mentioned before, on moral grounds: Singer claims we must alter our moral perspective completely to design a more charitable world and society. ... Singer begins his argument by stating that this is “bad”- we must of course agree, starvation is dreadful. ... This question is the basis of Singer’s argument. ... He wants “the whole way we look at moral issues- our moral conceptual scheme” to be altered. By beginning with the argument: “if it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing something of comparable moral importance we ought, morally, to do it”, he claims that charity is part of being a good person. ... Peter Singer gives a better example of a drowning girl. This situation is simple to understand when so close by, nobody would disagree on moral grounds with helping the man on the ladder, or indeed the girl from drowning when the effort we would put in to rectifying the situation would be far out weighed to the bad it would cause if we didn’t help out. Singer introduces a very prevalent point (not to mention what some conventional people would call controversial, although I do not see myself why): that of which we do not care about if we are not faced with it. It is not any different Singer argues, if the person is 5meteres away or 5000 miles- what matters is that they need aid. We should (because we cannot do much else) donate money to charity- in fact it should become a moral obligation to. ... Singer wants to alter this way of thinking by hopefully, altering our moral way of thinking and thereby banishing the consumer society and replacing it with a much less selfish one, that will donate whatever spare money (all that they would have spent on consumer goods) on charity. One might argue that we are too far away, that we cannot be expected to hear of all of these needy peoples so we have no moral responsibilities towards them, and therefore carry no moral significance anyhow. Singer reminds us though, of the excellent transport and communication network we have managed to develop. ... Singer wants us to radically change our moral outlook to suit our moral responsibilities, our moral duties. ... “The traditional distinction” that we have developed between charity and duty, Singer claims, must be altered. Morality must be a duty; we cannot attempt to make a free and equal world if we choose when we should be moral, just ignore morality itself, because it doesn’t suit our desires. Singer has put forth the option of two solutions to this problem: a moderate one and a stronger one. The moderate of which entails you to give up enough of what you have to prevent “bad occurrences” without giving up anything of moral significance, or importance. |
