Patricia Hinds-Webb Persuasive Essay 10-13-03 There has been a rise in the volume of violence portrayed in the media during recent years, thereby changing how we look at entertainment. Violence has always been apart of entertainment, but this change has provided a greater exposure to violence in a wider range of media viewed by both adult and children. For one thing, there's more of it. An after school television program ten years ago would be Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, and Dragon Ball Z, and these program were perceived as non violent characters saving the world. While an after school program of today would be playing video games on a Sony’s PlayStation 2 and watching music videos on BET or MTV. Lets not forget Jerry Springer and Rickey Lake. Grand Theft Auto is one of the top-selling video games in the world that is programmed so players can beat prostitutes to death with baseball bats after having sex with them. Music videos shows artists performing degrading lyrics, beep, beep, to sensor the words, while your women dance around half naked. The talk shows expresses who had been sleeping with who, when and where. Although physical violence on the regular network channels has shown an increased, there is a greater increase of psychological violence. There are more cartoons showing killing, fighting and how to intimidate. Ten years ago you would not hear a cartoon character say “Shout Up” on what is intended to be a children television program, but today it is an acceptable statement.
