Good Morning Mr Haughey and class, Initially, Aboriginal art seems to have had an important religious meaning. Such was the Aborigines' approach to life that religion was closely connected to social, political, and even practical aspects of their existence. Contemporary Aboriginal art, although it lacks the symbolism of the earliest rock paintings and has indeed been deliberately adapted for a non-Aboriginal audience, maintains its roots in the traditional religious worldview. Certainly, some understanding of this religious or spiritual background is essential to an understanding, and a fuller appreciation, of all Aboriginal art.
