There is a versatile crop that was once widely grown throughout the world, and its fibers were used in a variety of products. ... The current law views hemp as a type of marijuana, and therefore it is illegal to posses or cultivate. ... After some research, discoveries led to the decision that the United States sought to criminalize marijuana and hemp not because of the psychoactive properties of the plant, but because it was beginning to compete heavily with other fabrics such as nylon and cotton (Backstage 1). One must take a second and realize how powerful and dumb of a reason to make hemp and marijuana illegal. All of this time people have thought that these plants were illegal because of their psychoactive effects. The reason why hemp and marijuana were originally made illegal was because these plants competed with fabrics. ... Anslinger, Lammont DuPont, and William Randolph Hearst made hemp illegal. ... However, the worst thing one could do with a marijuana crop is to plant it within twenty miles of hemp plants. The hemp plants would actually pollinate the female marijuana plants and the plant would produce little more than tons of seeds, which are not used for their medicinal properties. ... In fact, legalizing hemp would result in many illegal outdoor cannabis-growing operations being completely ruined by pollination by hemp plants. ... The government must realize that marijuana would be impossible to plant near hemp just for the fact of different space needed.
