Reparations Owed To Blacks
Reparations for African Americans is a very controversial issue in today’s society. ... Others such as the Jews and the Japanese both have received reparations. Also various groups of Eskimos, Native Americans, and the Aborigines of Australia, all have received reparations for the wrong doings of their people. Individuals such as Randall Robinson, Tavis Smiley, John Conyers and Richard America, are all advocates, but on the other side, there are people such as Ward Connolly, Senator Rick Santorum, Jack Brooks, and Henry Hyde who strongly oppose the idea of reparations being paid to African Americans. These opposing individuals feel that the issue of reparations is frivolous and a waste of the committee’s time. ... The victims and their descendants of this long debated issue have waited far too long and it is time that reparations are paid for an immoral and inhumane deprivation of African slave’s lives, their culture, and most of all, their freedom. African Americans are entitled to reparations. ...
For the many injustices and psychological damages that have been infringed upon African Americans, we have yet to receive reparations. There have been others such as the Jews who were victims of the Holocaust during World War II that have received reparations due to the killing of six million Jews by the Germans. ... The Holocaust had a devastating affect on the Jews and because some of the survivors of the Holocaust are still living today, reparations for them seem to come easy. ... The Japanese also received reparations after World War II. ...
Still others who have received reparations were various groups of Eskimos, Native Americans, Aleuts and survivors of a 1923 massacre in a predominantly black Florida town all of which received restitution- combined more than $1 billion dollars. ... Now the idea of reparations for blacks doesn’t seem so far away. ...
There are those that are in favor of reparations being paid to African Americans and those who feel that reparations would only cause a division between blacks and whites. Those that are in favor of African Americans receiving reparations are advocates such as Tavis Smiley. His argument is that if the Jews, Japanese Americans and other nationalities have all received reparations then why can’t blacks? Tavis believes in using the court system to put a finer point on the argument of reparations and then maybe building momentum for a political solution. ... Others such as John Conyers, are proposing the Proposed Reparations Study Commission to look into the investigation of reparations being paid to African Americans. ... Also, the national movement and groups such as the Black Reparations Committee and the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America are investigating all of the alternatives to bring this issue to a resolution. ...
Still there are those that deeply oppose reparations being paid to African Americans. ... Ward Connolly feels that Affirmative Action should satisfy blacks and believes that giving reparations would only cause a division between the two. ... Both Jack Brooks and Henry Hyde, a republican of Illinois, feel that it’s not that big of a deal and that John Conyers hasn’t really been trying to push the issue of reparations. ... Conyers further states, “that legislation known as the Commission to Study Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act has never been debated in Congress” (Conyers 20). Still there are other opponents who feel that there is no precedent for paying people who are dead because reparations are generally awarded to survivors and it is unfair for a system to penalize those 20th century immigrants for a system not of their making. ... Also the government’s rationale is, “Why should I pay reparations to current African Americans when they were not slaves and I’m not your slave master? ...
Reparations are necessary to the black community because first and foremost, African Americans should be compensated for the enslavement of our ancestors. ... For each of the other cases of reparations being sought and paid to by the Jews and the Japanese were both able to restore their culture and rebuild their places of worship, their schools, and their traditional languages. ... ”
Although reparations of payment continues to be a controversial issue with our society, one cannot argue the fact that reparations are needed to repair the many wrongs, injuries and damages inflicted upon our ancestors who were made slaves by our society. ... Reparations is a national and global issue as well and should be addressed nation wide. ... Those advocates lobbying for reparations found that the Japanese, Jews, Native Americans, and others have all received reparations so why can’t African Americans?” For those who oppose reparations should not look at reparations as causing more division between blacks, and whites, but rather looking at it as restitution be paid for to help encourage the healing process among our people.
