San Pasqual Fire Department
|
|
|
San Pasqual Fire finds its beginnings with the Southeastern Conference of
Seventh Day Adventists, who in 1957 built a boarding high school Academy in the
Eastern end of the San Pasqual Valley. It was in 1975 that the staff and residents
of the San Pasqual Academy formed a volunteer fire department to protect the
Academy itself. They acquired a used Federal Fire engine that had been used to
protect a U. ... Navy base and thus began the San Pasqual Volunteer Fire
Department. ...
It was during this time (about 1975) that the County of San Diego, who had
been paying increasingly higher fees to the California Department of Forestry for
off-season fire protecion, brainstormed an idea to reduce those costs. They began
to sponsor the formation of volunteer fire companies within the rural communities
of the County, equipping them with engines and equipment. ...
San Pasqual Fire benefitted from this, and in 1978 was taken under the
counties wing, so-to-speak. The County purchased for them a second engine and
provided improved safety and fire equipment. The Department became responsible
for an increased area as well, which the volunteers were quite happy to do.
Unfortunately fire departments rarely generate income over expenses, and the
volunteer departments were finding it difficult to remain as well equipped as
support from County waned.
