“Schizophrenia is the label given to a group of psychoses in which deterioration of functioning is marked by severe distortion of thought, perception, and mood, by bizarre behaviour and by social withdrawal”. (Acocella: 1993: P.392) Symptoms: Although there is a general agreement on the major symptoms of schizophrenia, some authorities disagree about which are the fundamental symptoms. (Mandan: 1995: P.264) Symptoms of schizophrenia involve disturbances in many areas of functioning. (Davidson: 1998: P.218) There are 2 types of symptoms- positive symptoms and negative. Positive symptoms (excesses) include disorganised speech which makes the schizophrenic hard to understand, unshakable false beliefs- delusions and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t really there).
