School Experience

For my pre-course school experience I visited a maintained secondary school and a maintained junior school. ...

The junior school educates both girls and boys between the ages of seven and eleven and has approximately five hundred pupils, which are divided up into four-year groups with a four-form entry system and is the main feeder school to the secondary school. The secondary school educates boys between the ages of eleven and sixteen, approximately six hundred boys attend, and they are divided into five-year groups with four forms. I was surprised to note that although the junior school has less pupils it has more staff, including an additional five-full time, on site, Special Educational Needs (SEN) teachers. ...

The aims and ethos of each school appeared very similar and from what I could understand contained the fundamental founding principles of how they are organised and operated. I was informed that they were roughly divided up into educational, personal and vocational expectations for pupils, staff and the whole school. For example, school staff training, valuing diversity and equal opportunities, curriculum content, attitudes and behaviours etcetera. The following quote by the secondary Head teacher supports and expands on this:

There is no simple way to good discipline, and this is not achieved just by a list of rules of conduct and procedures, good discipline is the product of a whole school approach which involves, the school ethos and beliefs, a summary of which is curriculum issues, student perception and involvement, and in school training (INSET)

Pastoral responsibilities in each school are wide reaching with the key focus on promoting the general welfare of the individual pupil.
