American education is not where it needs to be. The courses and instruction offered to low-income and minority students make it difficult to meet the basic requirements of higher education. Of those who do attend a four-year college, many do not possess the basic academic skills needed for success. Moreover, the socio-economic status of parents has a dramatic impact on how far their children will go with their education.
Enrollment and success in higher education are influenced by many factors: previous academic achievement, the courses taken in high school, motivation, cultural issues, awareness of opportunities, and the ability to pay. ... Today, the reality is that student aid has not been able to keep up with the increasing costs of higher education. ... Meanwhile, financial aid is necessary, but it is not the only pre-condition for college attendance and success at higher education.
Continual guidance and support are needed to make higher education a realistic possibility later on. ... Students from good public or private schools who have intellectual and social skills, with the benefit of well-educated middle-class parents, are generally successful in higher education.
