School Uniforms and Student Behavior

... Approximately 1 in 4 students have reported being worried about becoming a victim of crime or threats in school (Journal of School Health, 1998).
In 1996, President Clinton announced in the state of the union address that schools should teach character education and support school uniforms, curfews, zero tolerance for guns and drugs in school. This effort to reform schools has resulted in several school districts adopting a standardized dress code for students.
Since, many school districts have implemented school uniforms and/or some form of a mandatory dress code as a way of curtailing student violence, gang activity and peer pressure evolving from clothing. The intent is to move the negative attention away from the students’ clothing, to minimize the peer pressure and conflict among students and improve the school environment.
Advocates of school reform stress the advantages of student uniforms on behavioral and academic outcomes. In addition to encouraging students to consecrate on learning, rather on what to wear, uniforms can be a social equalizer that will promote school peer acceptance, school pride and school spirit. A student’s appearance is an important part of the nonverbal communication individuals use to establish credibility.
This study will examine the relationship between student behavior and the way students dress. In addition, the statistics to be evaluated will determine if a decline existed in student behavior incidents, or whether the results remained unchanged when dress codes were enforced in schools. Students who wear uniforms will have a lower rate of behavioral incidents, than students who did not participate in a uniform dress code. The effect of the dress code on the school environment will also be explored, and if schools are benefiting in any way from the trend.
