In the early part of the 19th century there were no schools in the southern states of America admitted black children to its free public schools. A Sunday school for Blacks was established in 1786. Sunday school was a significant aspect on behalf of Africans to obtain freedom. These schools not only taught religion, however incorporated reading, writing, and basic arithmetic. This school and six others in the city began receiving public funding in 1824. The school building was also used as a church which drew a congregation of over 300, including many slaves.
