Service Project

Service Learning Project I did my service learning project at the Boys and Girls Club and at Mr. Harding’s classroom. The Boys and Girls Club is located in Franklin, while Mr. Harding teaches at Shoals High School. While working at both of these places I was involved in working with children. At the Boys and Girls Club I communicated with younger kids and at Shoals High School I helped with students who had particular handicaps. I will discuss some of the activities and scenarios that occurred at each location, follow that up with what I learned from each experience, and relate this to the material we have talked about in class. At the Boys and Girls Club I mainly worked with kids between the ages of five and twelve. I was amazed at what all went on at the Boys and Girls Club. I did not know that they had basketball leagues, board games, video games, pool, bumper pool, computers, and other activities for the kids. My first day was definitely a learning experience in many ways. First, I played basketball with four kids. They were so energetic. I was surprised at how easily these kids forgot things. One minute these two boys were bickering over a foul call. They seemed like they hated each other at that point. Then about five minutes later they acted as if they were best friends and there had never been a confrontation. Later on I noticed that these same two kids did not really hang around each other that much after the game. I think that they like each other, but they just have different interests. One of them is always playing basketball and the other one is usually in the game room playing video games or watching television. Despite these differences they still play some games of basketball together. I also noticed that generally all of the boys also have a bad habit of forgetting to eat. They seem to get so caught up in playing games they simply forget to eat of that they are hungry. Then they complain about their heads hurting. It is only then that they will go to the concession stand and get something to eat. On one particular day I even heard one of them say that he was starving as soon as he arrived, but what did he do? Well, he played games for about an hour, then came up to me and said that his head was hurting. He forgot his money so I gave him two dollars to get something from the concession stand. He got a Snickers bar and a Mountain Dew. Sure enough about thirty minutes later he was back into action running around and yelling. One more thing that I noticed is that most of these children like to tell on other kids for doing something wrong, no matter how small the issue may be. It seemed like every little thing that happened I was informed about. One little girl even told me to make another little boy quite picking his nose because it was grossing her out. Most of these kids seemed to be very spacious with their attention as well. More often then not, they would start a game and then not finish it. I played checkers with many kids. Most of the time they would get bored with it and leave before the game was over. I thought that video games would keep the children’s attention, so I tried playing some games with these same kids. Again, they did the same thing and it wasn’t because they were getting beat. I know this because most of the time I was the one losing. However, most of the kids that started a basketball game finished it and the kids that started watching a cartoon finished it also.
