Subliminal Messages
Subliminal messages are not science fiction; they are very much real in today’s society. ... Evidence gathered through research has determined that subliminal messages are effective as well as defective.
The realization of subliminal perception in advertising was not addressed until the late 1950s. James Vicary, a marketer, in 1957 said he had subjected moviegoers to split-second messages urging them to eat popcorn and drink Coca-Cola (Onion 1). Vicary claimed that no one actually saw the images, but the messages reached the subconscious of the viewers and triggered an increase sale of popcorn and Coca-Cola by fifty-seven percent (Onion 1). Vicary’s experiments sparked public outrage, fear and even talk of Congress and the Federal Communications Commission banning these messages (Onion 1). ... Wilson Bryan Key’s views of subliminal perception affected the media greatly. ... Key also believed that advertisers use subliminal messaging of sexual nature to manipulate behavior (Carroll 2).
Subliminal perception occurs when stimuli presented below the threshold for awareness are found to influence one’s thoughts, feelings or actions (Kazdin 1). Some examples of subliminal messages include small images in larger images, an audio message inside a cassette tape, hidden messages inside songs and hidden words or pictures in the media (McIntyre 1).
