Schools have complex rituals, stories, symbols, and traditions that all combine to create the culture of the school. ... A principal must be able to identify the campus culture and be able to develop it around a vision of what defines a successful school. The culture of a school has a significant impact on the way people think and feel about their school. Numerous studies, such as the British Study by Rutter, have identified the organizational culture as a critical component of successful teaching and learning. Strong, collaborative, and positive cultures foster the success and productivity of a school. They also can improve the collaborative activities, build commitment, increase the focus upon what is important and valued, and they can channel the motivation and energy of a school.
Schools that have a strong culture make their mission and purpose the focal point of their success. ... The mission and purpose not only gives people guidance and goals for which to work for, but also gives values, beliefs, assumptions, and norms that are other concepts in which stakeholders can use to capture the school culture. ... School rituals and ceremonies are part of the history that can be critical for a principle to understand if they want to know the culture of a school. The culture is influenced by how people have coped with past problems, establishes their rituals, develops ceremonies, and strengthens their beliefs.
