In 1998, Comedy Central, a cable television channel, aired a pilot episode of an independently funded animated series by the name of South Park. Prior to the program’s premiere, the public had little idea what controversy was about to erupt, and how the face of comedy was about to be remolded into something completely unfamiliar. Upon seeing the first advertisements, the public began to raise questions about what they were about to see. What could be so bad about a series that has four male third-graders for protagonists and is made entirely out of cheap cardboard paper? The characters might have been animated poorly, but the content of the dialogue was so intense and vulgar that the poor animation was almost unnoticeable. The public was rattled by the numerous insults exchanged between the characters and the very disturbing storyline involving aliens and humans who were being controlled by them. The show has progressed exponentially since that time and is today one of the most popular animated series in cable television history. The animation soon progressed to become state of the art; and as the ratings steadily increased, so did the quality of the show’s content. Trey Parker and Matt Stone veered off the classic toilet humor and vulgar insults to more sophisticated levels of comedy.
