Biography Information Sigmund Freud was born Schlomo Sigismund on May 6, 1856 in Moravia what is modern day Czechoslovakia. Sigmund did not live in Moravia long, when he was three he moved to Leipzig, where he lived for a short period before moving to Vienna where Sigmund spent much of the rest of life. His father, Jacob Freud, was a wool merchant and he was a Jew in a time period where Jews were a minority that was treated badly. Freud did not look at his father as a real father figure very much and often looked at historical figures as father figures. As a kid Freud was described as a person who needed both an enemy and a good friend. People say that Freud’s father or nanny may have sexually abused him, which may have caused him to come up with some of the theories that he later came up with. Even though Freud’s father was a Hasidic Jew they do not believe that religion was too prominent in his household, in fact, Freud came out as an atheist who does not believe in any god. Freud decided to study medicine and received his MD after eight years, when he was twenty-five years old. While studying at the university Freud met a philosopher named Ludwig Feuerbach, Freud admired this man very much. Freud spent six years working in a laboratory with a man named Ernst Brucke. This is when Freud began to start making theories. He then gave up physiology and went back to school to study many medical fields, he finally chose to study neuropathology.
