Throughout the chapter, there are many examples of religious secularism and cultural ecumenescense through the Islamic art and architecture. One example of this religious aspect is the art showing the archangel Gabriel, part of the first surah of Islam. An example of Islam being a cultural ecumene is the stone statue combining Iranian and Byzantine influences in their description of the caliph al-Walid II. Ibn Battuta learned his concepts of gender relations in the Arab heartland of Islam. As he traveled he was often astonished and sometimes shocked, by the status of women in other Islamic countries. In the Turkish and Mongol regions between the Black and Caspian Seas, wives of local, ruling Khans owed property. When the senior wife appeared at the khan's residence, Ibn Battuta observed the woman being treated with respect. IN the Maldives Islands, Ibn Battuta observed that woman didn't cover their hands, no even the queen. Most wore a apron from their waist to the ground with the rest of their bodies exposed. In Mali, female slaves and servants went publicly into the ruler's court completely naked. When Ibn Battuta found a scholar's wife chatting with another man, he complained to the scholar and was put in his place During the great reign of Islam, leaders were very respectful to the religions of others.
