Philosopher Judith Thomson begins her explication of the morality of abortion by considering the typical anti-abortion argument- the claim that the fetus is fully a human person from the moment of conception. ... By granting her opponents their main premise, Thomson strengthens her argument by showing that they are wrong regardless of this point.
Thomsons next move is to review the typical anti-abortion argument surrounding this main premise and attempt to show that it is flawed. ... Therefore, an abortion may not be performed. Thomson uses the example of the famous unconscious violinist to undermine this argument. ... In this example, Thomson asks you to imagine that you find herself hooked up to a famous unconscious violinist that will die if he cant use your kidneys for nine months. ...
Thomson thinks it is far from obvious that you are obliged to stay in that bed, hooked up to the violinist. ... But it is important to remember that Thomsons reason for rasing the example is not because she thinks it proves that abortion is acceptable. What she is trying to do is show that the usual anti-abortion argument is not acceptable. ... The anti-abortion argument deals with the particular case of abortion by reasoning from a more general principle: if we have a choice between respecting someones right to life and respecting someones right to control their body, the right to life should always win out.
