Welcome to another in our series of SLV online forums. Today we are discussing the Herald Sun Prize for Young Adult Fiction, one of 5 awards which comprise the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. Mary Delahunty, Minister for the Arts, announced the Shortlist for the Awards on Friday 24 August. It is my pleasure to welcome here today Catherine Latimer and James Moloney. Catherine Latimer is a Youth Services Librarian with the City of Boroondara and here today in her capacity as Convenor of the Young Adult Fiction Panel which also includes judges Garry Disher and Alison Goodman. James Moloney is the author of Touch Me, one of the three books shortlisted for the Herald Sun Prize for Young Adult Fiction. James is joining us from Brisbane today. James has worked as a teacher and librarian. He currently writes full time. In 1997 his young adult novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove was named the Australian Children ’s Book of the Year, Older Readers in the Children ’s Book Council Awards. It also won the Family Award, the 1997 Children ’s Peace Literature Award and was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier ’s Literary Awards. His book Touch Me which has been shortlisted for the Herald Sun Prize has been described by the 2001 judges as exploring ‘the complicated issues of gender and body in a tightly woven, multilayered story of sporting competition and sexual politics.
