The Need for Weed

The Need For Weed Marijuana is one of the most common illegal substances in our culture today, and it is here to stay. Recently, marijuana has now replaced corn as America’s top selling cash crop. The debate over the legalization of marijuana is long standing and will continue indefinitely for years to come. Both sides of this issue are passionate in their positions and provide strong arguments to support their stands. After reviewing most of the information, I understand each argument and I feel strongly that it would do our country more good than harm to decriminalize marijuana. Aside from what the government would like you to think, there are actually positive effects that come from the use of the drug we call “weed.” One of the most popular current controversies dealing with the ongoing war on drugs is legalizing Marijuana for medical purposes. Advocates of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes argue that tetrahydrocannibol, the active ingredient in marijuana, is useful as an antiemetic and appetite stimulant and also has mood enhancing properties. Patients with cachexia or those with wasting syndromes secondary to AIDS, cancer and multiple sclerosis claim particular benefit from it. Marijuana also can be used to treat glaucoma. Yes, some alternatives exist, but marijuana use can avoid some of the harmful side effects of the others, especially considering that marijuana can be used medicinally alongside many other drugs; whereas, alternatives to marijuana cannot. As of August 1999, five western states passed laws legalizing the medical use of marijuana. Over the past two decades, ore that 20 states and the District of Columbia have passed measures recognizing marijuana’s therapeutic value, but they didn’t authorize it. Some states have made progress towards helping the ill, but there are also those in other states who are experiencing the same illnesses and dying from the same diseases that deserve the same treatments. Jeff Jones, executive director and co-founder of the Oakland Cannabis Buyer’s Cooperative, remembers being 14 years old and watching his dad die an agonizing death from kidney cancer. “Exactly four months after my dad passed away, I heard on CNN about Judge Young’s recommendation that marijuana should be made available for treating things like chemotherapy-induced nausea. I’ll tell you the message I got: that the federal government had been withholding valuable medicine and was indifferent to the suffering of its citizens.” (Koch, 712) What our country needs to do is stoop looking at marijuana as an illegal substance, and instead realize how helpful it can be for those with serious diseases.
