Tourism both enriches and impoverishes. Discuss with relation to tourism in countries of the Global South.
The World Tourism Organisation defines tourism as, “the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environments for not more than one year. ... This tourism explosion has led to it being the second largest industry in the world; generating huge amounts of money, creating jobs and improving infrastructure. However in recent years, it has become apparent that tourism is very complex and brings with it a number of advantages as well as disadvantages.
John Lea in, Tourism and Development in the Third World, Routledge 1995, Chap 1, describes international tourism as, “the most promising, complex and under-studied industry impinging on the Third World.” It is therefore important to look beyond the obvious economic networks associated with the tourism industry and gain a deeper understanding of the environmental and social issues involved, specifically in terms of the Thirld World countries found in the Global South.
For many countries in the Global South, tourist receipts are now the biggest single item of world trade. ... Tourism is also a labour-intensive industry, and its role in creating employment is held to be important. Such employment is not limited to work in hotels and restaurants, but also includes guides (both official and unofficial), transport, street vending and various forms of entertainment, and is subject to the multiplier effect. Furthermore, tourism is frequently perceived by local people as the only way of improving their incomes and quality of life.
The Yearbook of Tourism Statistics 1997 gives a measure of the significance of tourism to countries in the Global South.
